How to fill a deep flower pot?

Choose the Right Pot

Ensure the deep garden pots have drainage holes to prevent waterlogging. Select a pot size suitable for the type of plants you're growing.

Layer the Bottom for Drainage

Avoid filling the entire deep plastic plant pots with soil. This can make the pot too heavy. Use lightweight fillers to take up space and improve drainage. Options include:

Broken pottery or gravel: Place a thin layer over the drainage holes. This keeps the soil from clogging them.

Recyclable materials: Use clean, empty plastic bottles, foam peanuts (non-biodegradable), or upturned nursery pots. These materials create air pockets and lighten the load.

Add a Barrier

Lay a piece of landscape fabric or a thin layer of burlap over the filler. This prevents soil from settling into the drainage layer while still allowing water to flow through.

Fill with Potting Soil

You should use a well-draining potting mix. Consider mixing in perlite and vermiculite for better aeration. Add compost for nutrients. Stop filling 1–2 inches below the rim of your deep nursery pots. This can leave room for watering.

Plant and Water
