How to use seed plug trays?

Step 1: Gather Materials

Choose nursery plug trays with appropriate size depending on your plant type. Use a well-draining mix for seed starting. Pick seeds suitable for starting in trays. Labels for labeling different seed varieties. Trays or mats to catch excess water.

Step 2: Prepare the Plug Trays

Wash them with warm soapy water, especially if reused. This can prevent diseases. Fill each plug with seed starting mix. Tap gently to settle but avoid compacting.

Step 3: Sow the Seeds

Sow seeds at the depth recommended for the specific plant. Place one or two seeds per plug. Cover lightly with soil if needed. Use markers or labels to identify seed varieties.

Step 4: Water the Seeds

You can use a fine mist spray or bottom-watering method. Moisten the soil without displacing seeds. Keep the soil moist but not waterlog.

Step 5: Provide Optimal Conditions

Place seed plug trays in a well-lit area for 12-16 hours daily. You can also use LED grow lights. I recommend maintaining the temperature for germination. This is usually 18-24°C. Use a clear dome or plastic wrap to retain humidity. But you should ventilate daily to prevent mold.

Step 6: Monitor Growth

Most seeds sprout in 5-14 days. Snip the weaker one if multiple seeds sprout in one plug. This will avoid overcrowding.

Step 7: Water and Fertilize

Keep the soil moist when seedlings grow. Use a diluted liquid fertilizer when the seedlings have their first true leaves. You should apply weekly.

Step 8: Transplanting

Gradually expose seedlings to outdoor conditions for 7-10 days. Then, gently remove them from the plugs. Then, plant them in the garden or larger pots.
