The frequency with which you water hanging baskets depends on the climate and the soil. In dry climates, you should water once or twice a week. In milder climates, once a month will suffice. Water once every two weeks is sufficient if you have a hanging basket that is not in direct sunlight. If it is in full sun, it should be watered more frequently.
You need to water them more frequently than ground-level plants to keep the plants looking healthy and beautiful during the summer months. The soil type will determine the watering frequency because some soil holds more water than others.
You should water once a week during hot weather if you are using potting soil containing perlite and vermiculite. If you have time, check the soil before watering again. If it feels dry 1 inch below the surface, it's time for another watering.
If you grow your plants in an organic soil mix with peat moss as its main ingredient, water less frequently but deeper — about 1/2 inch into the soil every other week or so during hot weather. Water hanging baskets when they need it. You should water them twice a week if you can't do it every day.
If your plastic hanging baskets are in full sun, check the soil every day, and water whenever the soil is dry to the touch. You should water your plants more often if your area has a lot of sun and wind. But watering too much isn't good for plants because it may cause root rot or fungus problems.
If your christmas hanging basket is in shade, you don't need to water as often as full sun all day long. Less frequent watering may be necessary if you live in a cooler climate or if your plants are outside in winter.
The best time to grow plants in hang baskets is in early spring, when the weather warms up (typically after Mother's Day). If you live in a very warm climate, you can start your plants earlier. In general, it's best to wait until after the danger of heavy frosts has passed.
If you're planting from seedlings or cuttings, transplant them into the hanging basket once they're established and growing well in their starter pots. This is usually about two weeks after repotting. If you're starting from seed, sow them directly into your hanging baskets when temperatures are warm enough (generally mid-March through mid-May).
The veggies need long days and cool nights such as tomatoes. If you're growing them, then the later you can hang the basket, the better. That way it won't have to work so hard to ripen its fruits while they're still small.
Some small annuals like impatiens and snapdragons, which need lots of sun and warmth. Others like snapdragons and fuchsia, which prefer partial shade; still, others like petunias and coleus that tolerate both partial shade and full sun. Finally, some shade-loving herbs like basil or thyme (which grow well in pots) will also do well in containers.
Most hanging basket plants will thrive in containers that are anywhere between 10 inch and 18 inch wide. So start by choosing a container that's the right size for the type of plant you want to grow.
If you want a bushy plant with lots of flowers, use a wider container. If you want a tall, skinny plant with few flowers, use a narrower container. Also consider how much sun exposure your yard gets. This will help determine whether you should choose plastic or others.
